The Durham School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance’s aim is to provide a space for the cultivation of creativity through dance. “Dance is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun. Our role as Dance Educators is to help children climb their own mountains. As high as possible!”

We offer classes from 2 – 18 years old in all genres of dance including ballet, jazz, acro, tap hip-hop and contemporary. We take pride in providing different classes for different levels of commitment. Our emphasis is on quality training first, teaching the love of dance for the many benefits it provides to students: “Exercising the mind and body through dance stimulates creativity, confidence and joy! Dare to dream with us this season at DSBCD in Whitby and go beyond merely moving!”
We are an award winning studio, achieving the highest awards in choreography throughout Ontario and Internationally. DSBCD Director Madeleine Twyman was awarded The Outstanding Choreography Award at Youth America Grand Prix 2019.
We are recognized not only for our superb training grounds and high calibre faculty, but for our powerful outreach initiatives in the arts impacting our community in positive ways.
We guarantee the highest calibre faculty with real professional experience and post-secondary training. We have 10 faculty members at DSBCD in 2019/20 with specialized expertise in all genres of dance.

We believe in placing great value on performance opportunities. With our established relationships with schools and organizations in Toronto and New York City, we are looking forward to creating unique situations to further broaden our students perspective in the global dance community.
The DSBCD Youth company has recently performed at The Surrender Gala, The Regent Theatre for Project Brave, Durham DayTime TV, The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Moving Traffic: Healing in motion and The Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival.
We understand that not every student plans to pursue a professional career; however we believe that the discipline, strength and creativity instilled by the study of dance gives students the tools they need to succeed in any field they choose.
